The PhotoNewZealand International Collection is divided into Rights Managed and Royalty Free images:

About Rights Managed Images
When you license Rights Managed images, you are doing so for specific pre-defined usages according to your own requirements.  The licensing fees are based on several factors such as the usage, industry, duration, media, circulation and geographic distribution. You are typically granted one-time usage rights (though this can be negotiated according to your needs), and you must follow PhotoNewZealand's Rights Managed Licensing Terms for such usage. You are not allowed to edit or alter the images unless previously authorized by PhotoNewZealand.  By using Rights Managed, you are ensured that there is limited usage of the image; you can even request exclusive rights to an image to eliminate its simultaneous usage by other agencies and competitors.

About Royalty Free Images
When you license Royalty Free images or purchase any Royalty Free CD-ROM, you obtain use of the images or CDs for a one-time flat fee.  Royalty Free images are ready for you to use in multiple projects such as advertising, leaflets, packaging, internet and multimedia uses, and more. There are very few restrictions placed on how you can use these images (please review the Royalty Free Licensing Terms). The Royalty Free license also allows you to modify an image to create a unique work of your own. Royalty Free prices for single images are based on the size of the digital file you are purchasing and not their specific use.

How to search for images

Tips to improve your search experience
If the result of your search is too extensive and you would like to improve your search results, you only need to add the following three words "AND", "OR" or "NOT" after the first word entered into the search criteria.

For example, if you are looking for a child with glasses, in the search criteria box you would write:
child AND glasses

If the results of that search are still too varied because you see images of children and drinking glasses, you can improve your search by adding the following:
child AND glasses NOT "drinking glasses"

If the results are still not specific enough and for example, children with sunglasses do not interest you, you can add more "NOT" categories. For example:
child AND glasses NOT "drinking glasses" NOT sunglasses

Remember that if you click on an image you can see the keywords that describe the image. If in your search you find images whose criteria do not fit with your search, click on the image, identify the keyword that doesn't interest you and include it into your search preceded by "NOT" to reduce the amount of superfluous imagery.

Different types of searches

Keyword search tips
Go straight to the images you are seeking by choosing:

1) the type of licensing (Rights Managed or Royalty Free),
2) topics of interest (specialty categories such as Historical & Fine Arts, Celebrities, Creative, etc. as listed above), and
3) other physical image attributes (image orientation, format, etc.).

If you choose to include both Rights Managed and Royalty Free images, search results will be displayed within 3 tabs:

1) total images,
2) Rights Managed search results, and
3) Royalty Free search results.

Enter as many keywords as you want, separated by a space (a space means "AND").

Use "OR" and "NOT", either on their own or in combinations, in order to make your search more precise (e.g.: beach AND sun NOT child).

Enter either singular or plural forms, both will be searched.

Write combined words in between quotation marks (e.g.: "New York", "marine mammals") and add logical operators if necessary (e.g.: "New York" AND police).

Use the infinitive or the gerund for verbs.

Use the asterisk (*) as a wildcard (e.g.: write sho* to automatically include words like shower, shout, shoe, shore...etc. in your search. You may also use the wildcard at the beginning of words (e.g.: *board will include words like snowboard, blackboard, etc.).

Image number search tips
Enter as many image codes as you want, separated by a comma and without any spacing. E.g.: 4576,2900.

If you enter an erroneous image code, you will not be shown any "error" messages as long as you have entered at least one correct code.

Photographer search tips
Write the photographer's last name. When searching for more than one photographer write "or" between each name (e.g.: Coll OR Yarvin).

If you are using a combined name concept in your search, write it in quotation marks (e.g.: "Jaume Gual", "Butch Martin").

Using the lightboxes (registration required)
The lightboxes help you to create different selections of images according to the various projects you are working on simultaneously.

Creating a lightbox is easy: just rest your mouse on the collection icon that is under every photo () and you'll see icons numbered 1 through 6 pop up, representing each of the collections. Simply click the icon that corresponds to the number of the lightbox in which you wish to save the image. You can create up to six different lightboxes that will be kept until you decide to erase them. There is no time limit: the lightboxes will be waiting for you whenever you next visit the website. You can view the lightboxes by clicking on "Lightboxes" within the image search option of the main menu.

You can also email the images contained in a lightbox. To do so, click on "Lightboxes" within the "Search" option of the main menu, select the number of the lightbox which you wish to email, and then click on "email images" and fill out the form that will appear on your screen.

Using the shopping carts (registration required)
This website handles your purchases with the help of two distinct shopping carts:

Shopping Cart for Individual Images   shopping cart for images (either Rights Managed or Royalty Free)

Shopping Cart for CD's   shopping cart for CD-ROMs (Royalty Free)

You can click on the above icons located at the upper right hand side of your screen to view the contents of the different shopping carts at any time.

You can add images to your selection by clicking on the shopping cart under each image. To add CD-ROMs to your shopping cart: click on any image to view whether it is available on a CD-ROM, then click "Add CD-ROM to shopping cart". Alternatively, click on any CD within the CD store and then on "Buy CD-ROM".

The images or CD-ROMs you place in your shopping carts will be saved for you until your next visit, or until you decide to remove them from the shopping carts. You can review and license the images or CD-ROMs in your shopping carts at any time by clicking on the appropriate shopping cart icon  at the top of screen.

You can also email the images contained in a shopping cart: just click on the image shopping cart icon  , and then click on "email images" and fill out the form that will appear on your screen.

Using the loupe (registration required)
Unwatermarked preview images (288 x 210 pixels approx.) are available to unregistered users by clicking on any image. However in order to fully exploit the benefits of our search system, including the use of the loupe, we recommend that you register as a user.

This icon, () located under each image, allows registered users to enlarge any image to 499 x 354 pixels approximately, with a greatly reduced watermark, for use in layouts and presentations in accordance with the Comping License Agreement.

Business Account holders can further access unwatermarked previews for Rights Managed images (up to 1 MB at 72 dpi) and for Royalty Free Images (up to 500 KB at dpi) by clicking on this loupe .
