As one of New Zealand?s leading marine photographers, Darryl Torckler enjoys world-wide acclaim in the highly technical art of underwater photography.

He is a full-time professional photographer who is passionate about the sea and photography - both underwater and above water photographs. Because the underwater world is unique and exquisite, Darryl aims to capture the natural diversity of the sea and depict the beauty, drama and activity of a world that remains hidden for so many people.  At the same time, he likes to show people interacting with the sea ? diving, snorkelling, kayaking or simply swimming through crystal waters and schools of colourful fish.

His journey began with a boyhood fascination for the sea. Learning to snorkel and then scuba dive in his late teens, he picked up a camera soon afterwards. His photography tuition came from experience, eventuating in his first underwater photographs in 1973. Since then Darryl has devoted many years to perfecting his self-taught photographic talent, devoting much time to designing, building and modifying underwater housings for his SLR cameras.

These custom housings have proven invaluable for creating shots that are unattainable by conventional underwater photography methods. Because of this he has reached and remains at the leading edge of his field, experiencing phenomenal international success with his images. Darryl has won over 100 international photographic awards, including the Australasian Underwater Photographer of the Year award and four first places in the most prestigious wildlife photography competition ? the British Gas Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

For Darryl, photography is a continual process of development with infinite boundaries for improvement to his art. He looks forward to a future where new challenges are met, knowing the more pictures he takes, the more insight he gains and the better the results.
