Step by Step Guide

This section has been written to explain how to use our site and how to license stock images from us. We have tried to remove some of the mystery surrounding rights-protected (also known as rights-managed) images and we hope you find that this information assists you in working with us. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Searching the database
Using the various search functions of this site, you will be shown images that match the criteria you have selected. From the search results page you can click on an image to see more information about it. If you are not a registered user of our site you will only be able to view thumbnail images.

If you are a registered user of our site, you will be able to view larger watermarked images and you will be able to save images to your lightbox (see below). When you have located an image or image(s) that you are interested in click on the "Add to Lightbox" text next to the relevant image to add the image to your active lightbox.

Note: You are not committed to purchasing images that you have added to your lightbox

How do I view unwatermarked images?
Regular clients who have active credit accounts with us are able to be 'upgraded' so that their login enables them to view unwatermarked images. They are also able to download much larger unwatermarked comp images for use in layouts and designs. These comp images will print well on an inkjet printer to approximately A3 size (420mmx297mm) at 72dpi or A4 size (297mmx210mm) at 150dpi.

What is a Lightbox?
If you are familiar with e-commerce and online shopping websites, the simplest way to explain a lightbox is to compare it to a shopping basket. Your lightbox is the way our system remembers which images you have seen while searching the database.

A lightbox is unique to you - each time you sign into PhotoNewZealand, the system remembers those images you have previously added to your lightbox until such time as you decide to remove them by clicking "Remove from lightbox" next to each image. You can check which images are in your lightbox at anytime by clicking on the lightbox tab near the top of each page.

Working with Lightboxes
Lightboxes are the best way for you to narrow down your search. They allow you to save images that catch your eye while you are searching through the library.

You are not restricted to only one lightbox. Using your Lightbox Manager you are able to create new Lightboxes perhaps for different projects you are working on or perhaps for different clients.

Remember when you add images to your lightbox they are added to your ACTIVE lightbox. Remember to use your lightbox selector in the left hand panel to select the right lightbox to work with.

What is a Request for Quote?
Once you have decided upon the image(s) that you would like to use, click the "Add to Quote" checkbox next to the relevant image(s) in your active lightbox.

Then, when you have finalised the selection of images in your lightbox you wish to request a quote for, click on the "Complete Quote Request" button. Note that you can click on "Check all images" to add all the images in your active lightbox to your quote request.

Completing a request for quote
Click this button to complete your usage requirements such as use, size, territory, print run etc.

Please note that submitting a Quote Request does NOT commit you to a purchase. We will contact you normally within 30 minutes from the time you place your Request for Quote, to supply a firm quote and confirm your delivery requirements. You are not committed to a purchase until such time as you have accepted and confirmed our quote.

What do you buy when you buy an image from us?
Like most commercial photo libraries, we sell you a license giving you the right to reproduce an image or images for a set use and set period of time. We do not sell the actual physical (original) image. In this way our images may sell many times. We keep a record of where each of our images have been previously used and can inform you if there is a potential conflict of interest to you. If you are concerned that a competitor may wish to use an image after you have used it, you are able to request varying levels of exclusivity for a set period of time after you have used an image which will prevent others from using it during that same period. There is an additional fee payable for exclusivity.

How will you receive the image(s) you order?
We are able to supply images to you in a number of ways depending upon your specific requirements. The most common methods are:

  • High Resolution Scan downloaded from our image server
  • High Resolution Scan supplied on CD

At the time of requesting a quote you will be required to fill out your print specifications which will be confirmed after we have received the request. We will then undertake scanning to those specifications and will supply you with the digital file.

How are our prices derived?
Our fees are structured in such a way as to value the benefit of an image to you for the application you wish to use it in. In certain cases there may also be additional fees where an image has a high production cost.

We do not have a published rate card or one-price for all. We prepare a custom quote for you (within 30 minutes) specific to your particular requirements and usage.

What other fees are involved?
There are no other fees involved. The price quoted to you will include the supply of the image(s) you order as high resolution (300dpi) files via our download server. if you require images to be supplied via CD/DVD, there is no charge for the CD/DVD however the cost of the courier will be charged to you depending upon your location.

Who owns the copyright of an image
At all times the photographer as sole creator of an image, holds the copyright ownership of that image with PhotoNewZealand.com acting as the photographers duly authorised agent. We ask that you respect copyright ownership and that you do not attempt to unlawfully download images from this site.
