Stephen specialises in advertising and illustrative photography and has a passion for creating images of people, conceptual still life and landscapes.
Stephen started his working life as a teacher, firstly at Kaikohe (Northland ) and then Titirangi ( Auckland). A 21st birthday present of a 35mm present reinvigorated an interest in image making which he started at the age of 5 years, when he ?borrowed? his fathers camera for some first experimental work. On leaving teaching he took up a position as an assistant in an Auckland commercial studio. He was there for almost two years before leaving on the big OE.
On his return he set about starting his own business. He has now been shooting pictures from his own centrally based Auckland studio since 1988. He has photographed for most major brands and
advertising agencies in New Zealand. His approach is to go beyond the obvious when interpreting the client brief. This combined with his broad experience has won him many industry awards.
Stephen makes use of all that photography and computers have to offer. His studio is equipped with multi format cameras as well as both electronic flash and tungsten lighting systems. As one of the first photographers in New Zealand to adopt digital technology into his workflow, Stephen often delivers images as retouched, colour corrected high-res files. He is at home shooting assignments both in the studio and on location.
Photography is a passion for Stephen, as well as New Zealand and its people. This has resulted in several major bodies of personal work. He is particularly well known for his rodeo series, also his still life imagery of Maori carving.
In recent years, he has taken on leadership, promoting photography through industry associations such as the NZIPP and the AIPA.
