1. How much commission will I earn?
Based upon the followiung criteria we will offer you a commission rate on the net earnings of your images:
- The overall quality and uniqueness of your images
- The level of demand for the types of images you create
- Your committment to shooting regularly and making regular submissions
2. What formats do you accept?
We accept all formats including transparency, negatives and digital files although more than 95% of submissions to the library are now digital. We do have set criteria for quality and we will supply you with our detailed Submission Guidelines as part of our Contributor Pack so that you are well informed as to the standards required. In short, we generally do not accept images created on anything other than professional grade cameras and lenses.
3. What are your guidelines for high resolution scanned images or digitally captured images?
The following instructions are from our Submission Guidelines document:
3.2 High-Resolution Requirements
3.2.1 Scans from original film
The minimum size/resolution for high resolution scans from original film is A3 (297 x 420mm) @ 300dpi, approximately 5400 x 3700 pixels (48MB - 54MB). Files must be embedded with Adobe RGB (1998) colour profile.
3.2.2 Digitally captured images
The minimum size/resolution of high resolution digitally captured images is A4 (210 x 297mm) @ 300dpi, approximately 3508 x 2480 pixels (28MB – 32MB). Files must be profiled with Adobe RGB (1998) colour profile.
Images must be clean – even with digitally captured images there can be dust marks on the file from dust on the CCD in the camera.
Please be sure your camera meets these specifications - you can check on www.dpreview.com
3.2.4 Compression
Don’t apply any type of compression to the TIF files that you send to us.
3.2.5 Quality
All digital files will be subject to rejection if quality is not up to what we deem to be an acceptable standard. If you have any doubts as to the acceptability of your scanned file or digitally captured file, please contact to arrange an evaluation of a small sample of your files. As a general rule you should be capturing digital images in RAW mode and then post-producing your files to a 300dpi RGB TIF. For an excellent resource on digital imaging please see www.luminous-landscape.com
4. How much will I earn?
This is the 64 million dollar question! (and no, you won't earn 64 million dollars!) It is impossible to predict how much you will earn from your stock images given that sales are entirely dependant on the needs of our clients at any particular point in time. As a general rule, the more high-quality images of in-demand subjects that you have in the library the more you can expect to earn. Also, we have found that the more closely a photographer wishes to work with us and the more responsive they are to ideas we supply to them (from what the market tells us), the more they will earn.
5. Do I need Model Releases/Property Releases?
If you wish to maximise the return from your images we advise you to get all the necessary releases at the time you take the photo. Without a release we may accept an image but we will not be able to license it for anything other than editorial use, a market which does not traditionally yield a high return in comparison to the advertising and design markets.
6. My work is great - why won't you accept it?
Unfortunately there are millions of great images floating around in the world - some subjects being far better represented than others. If you supply images in a subject area that is already very well represented (for example landscapes) it is very hard for us to sell those images unless they are of a very high standard. While we do want to look at your images for marketability, if they are of 'saturated' subjects areas we are unlikley to accept them unless:
- they are at the higher end of the quality scale
- they exhibit a new and unique style
- they are of parts of New Zealand not well represented in the library
7. What's in demand?
This is the question we all want answered . . . and it changes from time to time depending on the market and where it is going. For example, the market for 'chocolate box cover' images is nowhere near what it used to be with clients now preferring edgier, more creative work. In general, the biggest selling areas in the library are People/Lifestyle, Concepts and Landscapes/Locations. That is not to say there are not good sales from other areas of the library (which there are) just that these are the most in-demand subjects.
8. When do you pay?
We pay commissions at the end of the month following the end of the month in which invoice payments are received from our clients. We pay commission by direct transfer to your bank account and email you a report in PDF format of the sales for that quarter.
9. Can I have my work in other libraries?
We prefer to be the only library in New Zealand that holds your work. However, we have no objection to your work appearing in foreign libraires so long as those images do not end up being marketed in New Zealand by an agent/distributor for that foreign library. In certain cases we will accept a photographer's work on a non-exclusive basis within New Zealand, however we will not be able to offer all the benefits of being with PhotoNewZealand in these cases.
It is a contractual requirement that we have exclusivity as to images and similar images. This means you cannot have the same or similar images in another library nor can you license the same or similar images to your own commercial clients. This allows us to maximise the earnings potential from your images when our clients request exclusive use (which commands a much higher fee than the regular license and gives the client a much higher degree of protection that the same or similar images won't be used by their competitors)
If a client of yours wishes to use an image which is in the library, you will be contractually bound to refer that client to us.
